Sample Catholic Wedding Musical Selection

Catholic Nuptial Mass

If you choose to have a Nuptial Mass, then your wedding will be similar to a regular Sunday Mass and consist of:

Prelude Music Instrumental selections and some Vocal selections
Entrance Rite Entrance of Priest, Groom and Groomsmen
Processional Music May have a vocal selection for mothers/Grandmothers of the couple. Instrumental Selection for the Bridesmaids & Bride
Greeting Priest
Penitential Rite Priest
Opening Prayer Priest
Liturgy of the Word
  • First Reading (Old Testament)
  • Responsorial Psalm (Musical Selection usually Sung by Cantor)
  • Second Reading (New Testament)
  • Gospel Acclamation (Musical Selection sung by cantor)
  • Gospel Reading
  • Homily
Rite of Marriage
  • Questions- asked by Priest of the couple
  • Exchange of Wedding Vows
  • Blessing of Rings
  • Exchange of Rings
  • Unity Candle or Blessing (Usually a musical selection sung by cantor, depending on the church)
General Intercessions Priest or person selected by couple
Liturgy of Eucharist
  • Presentation of Gifts (Musical selection usually sung by cantor)
  • Eucharistic Prayer
  • Sanctus (Holy, Holy - usually sung)
  • Memorial Acclamation (usually sung)
  • Great Amen (usually sung)
  • Communion Rite
  • Lords Prayer
  • Nuptial Blessing
  • Sign of Peace
  • Agnes Dei (Lamb of God - usually sung)
  • Communion Hymn - Musical selection usually sung by cantor)
Flowers to Blessed Mother This is an optional Tradition and depending on the Church, if you decide to present flowers to the Blessed Mother this ritual may be at a different point during your mass. Usually a vocal Selection is sung at this point

Catholic Wedding Checklist

Once you have announced your engagement it is important to start thinking about your wedding date. Most Catholic churches require you to book your date with the church at least twelve months in advance. It is important that you speak to your church as soon as possible regarding their requirements.

At least 12 months in advance
  1. Select your wedding date and time.
  2. Contact your church to reserve your wedding time and date.
  3. Speak with your Parish Priest or Wedding Celebrant regarding any questions about marrying within the Catholic Church.
At least 9 months in advance
  1. Contact your Wedding Celebrant to discuss the layout of your wedding.
  2. Register and start Pre-Cana. Your Wedding Celebrant can assist you.
  3. Familiarize yourselves with the readings that you can select for your wedding.
  4. Sign up for Wedding Seminar at your church (if applicable) or speak to the Church's Music Minster regarding hiring musicians and vocalist.
At least 6 to 8 months in advance
  1. Select your musicians and vocalist. (You want to secure musicians ASAP to ensure they are available for your wedding date.
  2. Speak with vocalist and music minister regarding musical selections.
At least 2 to 3 months in advance
  1. Finalize music for your wedding mass/ceremony.
  2. Order your Ceremony programs. (If applicable)
At least 1 month in advance
  1. Pay your musicians
  2. Finalize ceremony. If there are any changes, contact the wedding celebrant, musicians and printer (if applicable) ASAP.
1 - 2 weeks before your Wedding
  1. Touch base with your Wedding Celebrant and confirm your wedding rehearsal.
Note: Musicians and vocalist do not attend the wedding rehearsal

  • What type of musicians are you having? Be sure to select music that will utilize all of your musicians.
  • How does the music connect with your readings and with you and your spouse to be?

When you select your vocalist, be sure that they have spoken with the Music Minister at your Church to have their repertoire approved. This should be done before meeting with you to discuss the music.
